Oulu Market Square

Visitors to the Market Square know they have entered the living room of Oulu when they see the magnificent landmarks of Torinranta: the market hall, the old outbuildings and the Toripolliisi statue guarding the square.

In the summer, the Torinranta is bustling with tourists and locals alike, with greengrocers starting work early in the morning and food and restaurant vendors serving until late at night. In addition to charming restaurants and cafés, the old multi-coloured gazebos offer small and personal craft, clothing and interior design shops in all seasons.

In front of the 120-year-old Kauppahall, visitors to the market are watched over by Oulu's very own Toripolliisi, a statue that reminds us of the days when the fickle Toripolliisi kept the Kauppatori in order. It is known that in the 1700s, the bustling hub of port and export traffic quietened down over the centuries and the market area gradually became a place for visitors from the city and the provinces to meet and visit. The market police were needed for general surveillance and discipline, among other things.
